Dr. Sterling Ransone, Jr., MD, FAAFP Takes Helm as President of American Academy of Family Physicians

Dr. Sterling Ransone, Jr. is the new president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, an organization that represents more than 133,000 doctors and medical students.

Ransone has been working in rural medicine for almost 20 years, and he is the third generation in his family to do so. He currently works in Deltaville as the medical director of Riverside Fishing Bay Family Practice. He holds the position of assistant clinical professor in the departments of family medicine and population health at Virginia Commonwealth University.

At the Riverside Family Medicine Center in Newport News, Virginia, he had been the head resident in family medicine before that. Since 1995, Dr. Ransone has been an active participant in the AAFP. He also spent ten years serving as Virginia’s delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates.

He also served as a liaison between the Commission on Continuing Professional Development and the Commission on Health of the Public and Science, as well as the Quality and Practice Committee.

At the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, he has held the positions of president, vice president, board chair, and founder/first president of the organization’s political action committee, FamDocPAC.

Dr. Ransone attended the University of Virginia’s Medical College in Richmond and graduated with his medical degree.
